Original Comment of Vernon
James:
Email 1: May 2012 Dear Billy, My name is Vernon James, the father of Stan James. How
very interesting that you found pictures of Nellingen Post thru my son
Stanley. Of course, you may download the pictures you find interesting. It
would be nice if you would give me credit for them. I taught 6th grade there
from August, 1963 to June, 1966. My first year I taught in what was the
former German officers club located diagonally from the base theater. The
building was condemned by the US Army except for the ground floor which was
used for three classrooms of which was one I taught in. I believe it was torn
down shortly after I left Nellingen. I lived my first two years in the first
BOQ south of the Officers Club. My last year I lived just a 10 minute walk off base
just outside the south gate on the outskirts of Scharnhausen. My time in
Nellingen was very enjoyable. After returning to the States at the end of
1966 school year for additional schooling and marriage, I returned to Germany
for an additional 7 years. Your history of Nellingen Barracks is VERY
interesting! I'm still reading about its history. That is a huge
undertaking. If I can be of any further help please let me know.
I am now 85 years old this summer but thankful to God for the good health he
has given me. Billy, my wife and I live in the state
of Colorado about 150 kilometers north of Denver which is the capitol o the
state. We have three children: Lisa, Peter and Stan. Stan, our youngest
son was born at the military hospital in Heidelberg in 1973. I hope this will help some. Please stay
in contact. Vielen dank fuer alles! Email 2: May 2012 Billy, I applied for a teaching position in Germany
in 1958. That summer I went my ship with several hundred other teachers
and landed at Bremerhaven. I went by train to Frankfurt and on to
Aschaffenburg where I taught for two years. The next year I taught in
Bad Nauheim for one year and then returned to the United States.
In 1963 I returned to Germany and taught for 3 years in Nellingen and then
returned to the United States again to go to college for an advanced degree.
My wife and I were married in 1967 and returned to Germany where I taught for
two years in Ludwigsburg at the Pattonville housing area. In 1969
I transferred to the American School at Hahn Air Force Base in the Hunsrück
area where I taught for two more years. After another transfer to
Karlsruhe I spent from 1971 to 1974 teaching at the American School. In
June, 1974, we returned to the United States with our three children. Vernon James –
