Im Mai 2011 entdeckte Herr Ronald Daugherty meine Webseite im Internet. Gleichauf schrieb er mich an und hat mir folgendes erzählt. Ron war im Jahr 1954 mit der

357. Schweren Versorgungskompanie in der Nellinger Kaserne stationiert. Hauptaufgabe seiner Kameraden war es, die M-47 Panzer zu warten, reparieren oder zu transportieren. Ron erlebte auch die Ankunft der aller ersten Hubschrauber Kompanie auf dem Nellinger Flugfeld, es war die 328. Hubschrauber Kompanie.

Etwas was ihn sehr bewegt und fasziniert hat, war die deutsche Gastfreundlichkeit, die Gründlichkeit und Sauberkeit. Überall wo er 1954 hinkam, wurde er stets freundlich

und hilfsbereit behandelt. Ron hatte ein kleines Lieblingsgasthaus im Ortskern von Nellingen. Dort wurde der Kappenabend, Fasching und andere Feiertage gefeiert.

 

Natürlich genoss auch Ronald das gute deutsche Brot und andere deutsche Spezialitäten wie auch unser Bier. Oft nahm er unsere gute alte Straßenbahn,

fuhr nach Esslingen oder weiter nach Stuttgart. Dort schaute sich Ron nach Kuckucksuhren und deutsche Fotokameras um und schickte sie nachhause.

Immer, wenn er im Stuttgarter Hauptbahnhof war, verspeiste Ron ein Wiener Schnitzel oder eine Bratwurst in Stuttgarts Strassen. Ron Daugherty hatte auch die Gelegenheit um München und Frankfurt zu besuchen auch das Oktoberfest.

Ron ist 78 Jahre alt (2011) und lebt mit seiner Frau Lee im U.S. Bundesstaat Florida. Beide feiern dieses Jahr ihren 50. Hochzeitstag.

Hello Billy:

 

Thanks for your response. Caught your web site and was delighted with the content.

I was stationed there in the year 1954. We did a lot of work on the M-47's and saw the arrival of the first helicopter squadron which domiciled there.

I have some photos from that time and will send to you but first wanted to ascertain your correct e-mail address.

If this gets through to you please reply and I'll forward material.

Sounds like you enjoyed your time on the base and living a good life in Nellingen.

I have fond memories of the German people I met during my brief time in Germany, particularly those in Nellingen who were so hospitable to us.

I used to frequently take the street car from outside the base to Nellingen and have lunch or a few beers in the Gasthouses. Could have been La Paloma

but don't remember. At our shop on base the cafeteria workers brought us good ham and cheese sandwiches on fresh baked German bread daily which

was great. On some weekends I would go by train to Esslingen or Stuttgart to shop for cuckoo clocks or excellent German cameras and equipment to

send back to the states. I always had Wiener Schnitzel at the Stuttgart train station when returning to Nellingen and the Bratwurst late at night on the

street in Stuttgart was always good after a night of drinking beer.

I was able to visit to Munich and Frankfurt during my stay. Octoberfest in Munich was fantastic. Nightclubs in Frankfurt were excellent.

I'm now 78 and retired living in Florida with my wife. I haven't had any contact with other soldiers I served with in Nellingen. They may be gone now

as some were older than me.
