Original Comment of Marvin Kelm:
January 3 2011 Recap of Lois and Marv Kelm trip to Nellingen/Esslingen
Germany 2010. We traveled to Germany in the end of October,
the dates are not important, this is a synopsis of our trip and stay , our
opinion and suggestions for those who may want to make a similar trip. It is meant to encourage
others to visit this area if you are making a trip to Germany or this area of
Europe. Esslingen is a great city to stay if, in this part of Europe, it is a good location
to make day trips from if you wish not to pick up and relocate often. We
arrived at the Stuttgart Airport, an easy airport to get around in, and the staff there were very helpful. We got
good information from the tourism dept at the airport. Much information was
received via internet before leaving home. Sorry to say the Information we wanted, was not furnished by the Esslingen tourism. It
was almost non existant, and uncooperative. Anyway , we received good
information at the Airport for the bus to Esslingen. We suggest not to change more money than
needed at the Airport, (Much better rates in town). The bus is just a short
ride to Esslingen and passed through some familiar villages , even after 50 some years. The hotel we stayed
at EcoInn am Campus was just a short walk from our bus stop, even with our
luggage. It was a bit difficult to find the first time , because the locals seem not to know the Hotel,
as it is a low profile hotel. (We liked that). We found the EcoInn to be
everything we expected. A few of the things that we liked. ; Great
breakfast, staff was very helpful they spoke plenty of English,, The manager
was very nice and held some great conversations. The room was not large, but nice plenty of
quiet, the stream/river running under and past it was very interesting. The
price was right. They were very accommodating in arranging breakfast for us at odd hours on
occasion. If you are driving, parking could be a problem. The location of the hotel was very conducive
to our many walks down town. Most of our spare time was spent walking around
Esslingen. To our benefit, Billy volunteered to pick us
up at the Hotel the second day. He showed us the area to Nellingen and of
course Nellingen itself. We met his family and got acquainted, which is not
difficult with Billy. Billy is very enthusiastic without being pushy. He ,his
wife and mother also speak English. (But don’t talk so fast) (you should try
to roll your r’s too). Just kidding you Billy ‘’. Nellingen is not
real familiar to me because when I was at the Kaserne we usually just passed through on the strassenbahn. The area
from the village to the Kaserne area are very familiar and nostalgic. I, My wife, and family have visited the area
several times since 1956 Billy made our day, on another occasion when
he picked us up again and we toured the Kaserne area. Of course the Kaserne
situation is described on his website. We visited the remaining building, which was
the service club and Billys mothers place which is in what was dependents
quarters in 1956, To make the day very memorable Billy took us
out to lunch at a local restaurant , and treated us to a German Lunch. UM UM…
Ate too much. While Billy was working, Lois and I took the S bahn to Stuttgart for a
short visit. We all remember Stuttgart well, yes? Hey there
are no more 5 mark weekends,, beer costs more now Of course it is only 54
years later. The trip to Stuttgart is not a lot different, more modern train
(hey they were modern then too, right). I can recall the conductor calling
out the stops now it is electronic. I was also introduced to Jochen Bender
the history curator for the village. I must give him thanks for giving me
much interesting history about the area. After some time at the city
archives, Billy picked me up and we went to his soccer game. The sports hall is in Kemnat a small village
nearby. I am familiar with Kemnat ,as that is where my dads cousin lived in
the 1950’s and till in the 80’s. I visited there many times, so I could walk
around the village and recognize many places. While I was doing this Billy was getting ready
and starting his indoor soccer game. I got back to the sports hall in time to
see Billy make a couple saves, (he is the goalie) He is a pretty fair player (for his age) in
fact really very fit. I think it was after the soccer game we were treated by
Billy and his wife to a home cooked dinner. Their house was very welcoming as
was the conversations we had. His mother is a very interesting person, and
has some great experiences she does
not hesitate to share. What a great time. In conclusion I must mention, I am forever
grateful to Billy for his website and for refreshing many memories. I also
must thank him for the encouragement for us to visit Nellingen again. It
brought back memories of some significant years in my life. It was especially
fun to recall some of the same experiences as Billy (A generation younger
than me) as I, throughout my life have been in the building, maintainence of
buildings and Schools. Billy , as we know is a Hausmeister. It is with a warm feeling we have made a new
friend via Email, a phone call, and finally a visit to his home. If a Europe trip is in your plans,
Nellingen/Esslingen should be a destination. Not to make Billy more work, but if you are in
the area, you should surely make contact with him. And yes, get him some more information about the
Kaserne, I wanna see it too. Marvin Kelm, Bloomer Wi, USA 94th Engr Bn (const) 1955 , 1956. |
